Louis Christiaan Kalff (1897-1976) Philips designer, lighting architect, commercial designer, architect, author, manager. Louis C. Kalff was one of the pioneers in the Netherlands in the area of industrial design. He was also the man who gave Philips’ advertising design a clear and modern look. In addition, Kalff made name as lighting architect with major projects, which he carried out with his employer Philips. Kalff started as a manager at an advertising studio at Philips. The orders went beyond merely designing promotional material and expanded to stands at fairs, advertisements, packaging, covers for brochures, display window material, shop material and product design. The Philips logo is largely designed by him as well. Under his supervision, the Lighting Consultancy was established. He participated with great lighting shows in international events, such as the World Expo in Barcelona, Antwerp and Paris. As a freelance designer, Kalff also made posters for the Holland America Line, Braat Stalen Ramen, Zeebad Scheveningen and PTT. With Philips, Kalff was also responsible for several architecture orders. For instance, he designed the Dr. A. F. Philips Observatory, the Diamantboerderij in Valkenswaard and several manors for executives. Before and after the war, Kalff was busy with industrial design, therefore, a great deal of Philips products passed his division ARTO (Artistic Design Group). In 1952, Kalff belonged to the founders of the Circle of Industrial Designers, which is nowadays called the Association of Dutch Designers. Together with René Smeets, Kalff co-founded the Academy of Industrial Design Eindhoven, which is now the Design Academy. After his retirement in 1960, Louis Kalff stayed connected to Philips as an advisor. In 1961, the supervision and execution of Evoluon was assigned to him. This was the last work of the genius lighting architect who has served as the ‘artistic conscience’ of Philips for almost forty years. It is the unique combination of graphic designer, industrial designer, architect, promoter of art and author of many publications which made Kalff well-known.
